I picked up this book because it looked like an interesting book and . This book was about Ashley Rhodes-Courter and her life after foster care. She was in foster care for 10 years and lived in 14 different homesd before being adopted by Gay and Phil Coureter, who changed her life forever. She got in touch with her birthmother, who causes problems and brings back terrible childhood memories throughout the book. Ashley goes to college, meets her future husband, and spends more time with herThe author gives a view of a world many of us never see. Ashley was a foster child when she was younger and this book updates her life from college to marriage to becoming a foster parent. If it was meant to encourage others to be foster parents, the descriptions of the difficulties with child services bureaucracy and other issues didn't make it look like an appealing prospect. On the other hand, as a statement piece to lobby for change and the author's future political ambitions, it worked
This was the sequel to Three Little Words, a continuation of ARC's memoir. The beginning was laborious at times, even though I did want to know what had happened in her life since the last memoir ended. It was more interesting to me when she talked about her journey as being a foster parent with her husband. She's one of my heroes for trying to make the world a better place for children and using her painful experiences to help them in ways other adults might not be able to understand. How sad
I loved her first book and also loved this followup. Ashley is an Amazing woman. She has become a beacon of light in the darkness that is foster care. She has moved on to advocate for children who are in the system that tried to chew her up and spit her out. I truly hope that she is able to bring about change and that her life continues to be happy and healthy. I also hope she finds time for another book. She is an eloquent writer.
I first read Ashley Rhodes-Courters first book Three Little Words while I was working as a high school library media specialist. This is a book that tells a horrific story of a young girl growing up in Florida's foster care system in the mid-80s and early 90s. It was assigned to me as a consideration for our state reading list. I was one of the readers who recommended it, and then argued successfully that it be included on the list. At the time I read the book I was not living in Florida. It
The writing style matured and it was even better than the authors first book.
Great sequel to Three Little Words. You could feel the raw emotion of the author! The joys and struggles as a foster/adoptive parent.
