Commentary Concering Books The Missouri Breaks
This edition I read is the screenplay for the movie. I couldn't find the original novel, if one exists. I originally wanted to read this because it was filmed in Montana AND because I had heard good things about Thomas McGuane. I really don't know how to evaluate a script, so I will just say that it kept me engaged throughout, and I guess that is enough. The characters were interesting at the least, and quite eccentric if not crazed at most, and I could see how the script could be made into a powerful movie. So, now I have the movie ordered on Netflix. Netflix reviewers described the movie as bizarre, but also a chance to see two great actors at their finest: Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando. I read the script as a novelty item, and now I will see the movie as a novelty item.
I am also pleased to say, having come from three generations back of Montanans, I now know where The Missouri Breaks are, and I am gratified to know. Might even find my way up there next summer.
