Crusade Against the Grail is the daring book that popularized the legend of the Cathars and the Holy Grail. The first edition appeared in Germany in 1933 and drew upon Rahn’s account of his explorations of the Pyrenean caves where the heretical Cathar sect sought refuge during the 13th century. Over the years the book has been translated into many languages and exerted a large influence on such authors as Trevor Ravenscroft and Jean-Michel Angebert, but it has never appeared in English until now.

Much as German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann used Homer’s Iliad to locate ancient Troy, Rahn believed that Wolfram von Eschenbach’s medieval epic Parzival held the keys to the mysteries of the Cathars and the secret location of the Holy Grail. Rahn saw Parzival not as a work of fiction, but as a historical account of the Cathars and the Knights Templar and their guardianship of the Grail, a “stone from the stars.” The Crusade that the Vatican led against the Cathars became a war pitting Roma (Rome) against Amor (love), in which the Church triumphed with flame and sword over the pure faith of the Cathars.

I gave up with only 50 pages to go. So, so, so boring.

Otto Rahn was a good scholar for his time. I think many of his conclusions came from what he wanted to find and the pressure he was getting from his sponsors (Himmler's SS). This book is Rahn's research into the Holy Grail mythos. It is a great work for the grail scholar, but his conclusions are jaded. I would recommend it as a great source for grail material, just be sure to do your own analysis.

Had to return to library before I was done reading it.

Astonishing and interesting scholoarship whose only failing is the near seamless incorporation of secondary sources, which does much to cloud the authorial voice. A provocative and engaging read.

What can one say about a book like this? Sometimes our enthusiasm and the desire to believe overwhelm us. Everything we see, everything we read seems to point in the same direction. But as we strive to communicate our vision to others, it shatters into fragments so that no one can quite comprehend what it is we are trying to say and why we are so convinced what we believe makes sense. Overall I enjoyed this book and found it interesting. Despite the title mentioning the Templars in the title, there was little about the Templars in the book. I expected the author to tie them in more. There is a lot of speculation, and much of the reading is tedious. Many people and places that are hard to keep track off. Unless you are familiar with the places, the troubadours, etc. I have started to read it a second time. Still, it is a worthwhile read.

Otto Rahn is listed as one of the possible influences for Indiana Jones. This fact is what drew me to search out his works. I was intrigued to know more about the man and his work that drew the attention of the Nazi mystics. On one hand, I was not disappointed. I am never disappointed when I learn something new or discover an area that I would like to learn more about. I was not familiar with the Cathars or the poetry and culture of southern France. Having said that, the work itself is rambling
