In 1974, playwright Ntozake Shange published For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf. The book would go on to inspire legions of women for decades and would later become the subject and title of a hugely popular movie in the fall of 2010. While the film was selling out movie theaters, young black gay men were literally committing suicide in the silence of their own communities.When a young Rutgers University student named Tyler Clementi took his own life after a roommate secretly videotaped him in an intimate setting with another young man, syndicated columnist and author Dan Savage created a YouTube video with his partner Terry to inspire young people facing harassment. Their message, It Gets Better, turned into a popular movement, inspiring thousands of user-created videos on the Internet. Savage's project targeted people of all races, backgrounds and colors, but Boykin has created something special "for colored boys."
The new book, For Colored Boys, addresses longstanding issues of sexual abuse, suicide, HIV/AIDS, racism, and homophobia in the African American and Latino communities, and more specifically among young gay men of color. The book tells stories of real people coming of age, coming out, dealing with religion and spirituality, seeking love and relationships, finding their own identity in or out of the LGBT community, and creating their own sense of political empowerment. For Colored Boys is designed to educate and inspire those seeking to overcome their own obstacles in their own lives.

A wonderful book. Necessary reading for anyone involved with LGBT communities of color, but everyone can find something here. The poetry in particular is quite beautiful and still manages to be politically progressive. This anthology is the first of its kind, and I for one hope that it will not be the last.3 1/2 Stars. Like most anthologies, this collection is a mixed bag. This isn't a collection of people who have all gone through a class on the best way to write creative non-fiction, but it is a collection of people who all have something to teach the reader about being a gay man of color. This is a collection willing to challenge a homogenous understanding of gay men of color, especially in regards to black gay men. Powerful poems and short stories. A must read for LGBTQ youth especially for white youth who need to see that sometimes it take a community to survive and not just coming out.
Real voices here, that we need to hear more like. Fantastic selection, a great collection, one I hope is in many libraries. Like the best anthologies, it turned me onto a lot of writers I'd have never found otherwise, and people who's work and twitters I'll be following.
I really enjoy this book because it let me see something from my life in a new way. There is always more i can know about the experiences of my fellow earth bound souls.

This book was so powerful, and moving! I'm so glad that such a resource exists for young men who are dealing with the pressures of coming to terms with their sexuality, as well as the everyday struggles facing people of color in the US, if not in other places. The variety of experiences depicted and explained in the essays, stories, and poems should offer a relatable story to almost anyone. This collection made me feel so many different emotions: joy, sadness, heartbreak, and pride. Should I
